The Chronic Health Impact of Mental Illness
The SFVA hosts two large cohort studies designed to examine the impact of mental illness on chronic disease risk. The Heart and Soul Study has followed a cohort of patients with coronary heart disease since 2000-2002 to determine how depression affects risk of future events. The study has generated over 150 publications and served as a resource to numerous trainees and faculty (https://heartandsoulstudy.ucsf.edu/). The Mind Your Heart Study is a prospective cohort of patients with and without PTSD followed with annual evaluations since 2008-2010 to determine how PTSD affects risk of cardiovascular disease and other health outcomes (http://mindyourheartstudy.ucsf.edu/).
